Do not go into the details about fights you had with your soon-to-be ex-spouse, the story of how you have to move, how your children are doing, and so much more. Divorce is hard. It will be emotionally taxing on everyone involved. If you need to talk to someone about your frustrations with the divorce, talk to a trusted friend, a family member, or a professional counselor.

Instead, when you talk with your lawyer, keep it professional. Only give them details about your life that pertain to the divorce. If it doesn't pertain to your divorce contract, then the lawyer doesn't need to know.

2. Ask For Free Legal Advice or Services

Just because a divorce lawyer helped you with your divorce, it does not mean that you can use their services for free, even for small things. A lawyer's time is very precious. They have lots of clients that they are working for, and they usually get paid by the hour. It is not fair to assume that just because they did work for you in the past, that you are entitled to free legal services.

If you do need help with a legal problem, you can hire the lawyer for their services. However, you shouldn't ask for favors that you aren't prepared to pay them for.

3. Try To Hire The Attorney For Something Other Than Family Law

Unless your family attorney specifically tells you that they practice that sort of law, only hire them for family law services.
